DINING ROOMS - Summerhouse "WHITE"

by Ronald Bricke & Associates

I always enjoy enticing my clients to follow their instincts for their design palette. The client for this dining space challenged me to create an overwhelmingly "sunny light" concept from top to bottom.

We started with the "Super White - Tinte Unite" polished tiles from Graniti Fiandre, added the Saarinen white marble dining table (from Design Within Reach) and then proceeded with the white synthetic leather "Turkana" swivel chairs from Moura Starr.

The polished white lacquer "Bump Wave" cabinet from Dakota Jackson floats in front of the "Phillion" white on white squares curtains from Creation Baumann and fabricated by Le Parc Interiors. Our friends at Jonathan Arnold, Inc. constructed the custom white acrylic lacquer pedestal. To help complete the design we turned to MW Moss for the Ingo Maurer "Schiltz" suspension light fixture.

Finishing touches were added with the Benjamin Moore "Super White" paint for the ceiling and "OC-68" for the walls. I was, however, unable to restrain myself from a touch of color. I used two colors of Bisazza glass mosaics (from Ann Sacks) as floor inserts.

DINING ROOMS - Modern Dining Room for Michael Kors

by Glenn Gissler Design

This dining area is in a penthouse loft that I designed for fashion designer Michael Kors in Greenwich Village. A simple approach using an ubiquitous modern vocabulary created a chic and appealing space for dining.

A large steel-framed mirror from Desiron was mounted on the wall to reflect the view of the horizontal windows and the stained wood venetian blinds; most importantnly, to insure that everyone has an open view!

The glass-topped chrome Parsons-style table was custom designed to fit perfectly into this corner of the main living room and is surrounded by six "Spoleto" chairs from Knoll Furniture (1971). The chairs are made with a seamless frame of tubular steel with a polished chrome finish and a cowhide seat and back with a distinctive lace detail, based upon some of the early Bauhaus chairs designed by Mart Stam. The simple glass cylinder vase with large Spilt-leaf Philodendrom leaves and the "Ball Bubble Pendant" (1952) light fixture designed by George Nelson complete the 'maximum results by simple means' that define this space.

Outdoor dining is the key to this living space, merging inside and out in a country club setting. Though protected, it allows views and breezes in Spring ,Summer and warm Autumn evenings.
